To resolution or not to resolution?

It’s a personal preference whether to have New Year’s resolutions or not…personally I don’t and I don’t recommend it either.

The start of a new year is filled to the brim with expectations and pressures, we are serenaded by calls to ‘change’ ourselves….’New year, new you’ (one that I myself am guilty of pedalling in the past), ‘lose 10 lbs in 6 weeks’, ‘make the career change you’ve always wanted’. So we feel like we are meant to be energised, motivated and raring to go to make all our dreams come true.

However the reality is often very different, if you’re in the northern hemisphere the festive season will have been cold and miserable and even though you thought you were going to get a rest over Christmas you probably didn’t because you were cooking, socialising, eating and drinking – which we all know leads to being exhausted and unmotivated!

So perhaps it’s OK to remove the highly unrealistic, and in some cases complete BS, expectations of the start of a new year and replace them with some kindness to ourselves, a reality check and rather allow a gentle easing into the year.

Setting yourself up for success in 2023

Just because I’m not a fan of resolutions and take a more realistic view on the new year doesn’t mean I don’t recommend committing to setting yourself up for success.

I lead myself and my clients through a simple but very effective process to close out the previous year and dig into your intentions, dreams and goals for the year ahead. Here’s a brief recipe that you can follow at home if you feel called to:

  1. Write out 3 lists reflecting on 2022: your proudest moments, what you’ve learned and what you are leaving behind (what is no longer serving you). Take a moment to really absorb what you’ve achieved and celebrate yourself.
  2. Check in with your intuition around what your intentions are for 2023. There are numerous ways to do this, I choose to do a tarot spread to gain insight into the messages coming through from my higher self. I take my time and make a record of what I find – for example take a picture, write out the guidance etc.
  3. Once you’ve digested the intuitive guidance choose 2 – 4 areas of your life to focus on in 2023 e.g. health, career, family, relationship with myself, money, community etc. I use a white board and create a spider diagram to get clear on what my dreams and goals are in each of the areas.
  4. Write out a vision or scene set when your dream or goal has been realised, this helps to inspire you and to bring it to life.
  5. Finally, work out what designing your life based on your intuition, intentions, dreams and goals looks like on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. E.g. I might prioritise one area of life first and make small daily/ weekly commitments to move closer to my ideal outcome. Over time build on these and you will literally build your ideal life one day, one week, one intention and one goal at a time.

Sounds like hard work?

I’m not gonna lie to you, the process I have outlined about does take time, energy and a willingness to get vulnerable – it is work. But I can promise you it is so worth it. It allows you to be so clear and intentional about what you’re working towards and to know at all times whether you’re actions are in alignment with your dreams. This builds confidence and is an excellent way to quiet the noisy mind.

To be very clear it is not possible to ‘manifest’ anything and everything you want. I used think it might be possible, I was wrong. You cannot manifest being taller than you are, you cannot replace a human limb if you have suffered amputation, you cannot bring people back from the dead – these are some very obvious situations in which ‘manifesting’ is utterly useless.

I say this because I want to be very clear that grounded and intentional designing and creating of one’s life is a powerful set of tools which can result in wonderful outcomes, deep joy and satisfaction. We can absolutely call that manifesting. However the word manifesting has been bandied about suggesting that magical thinking, pure positivity with no real action etc. etc. will result in your every dream coming true – which is BS.

Words of wisdom

In summary if you’re not feeling like taking life by the horns and finally realising all of your big goals in the depth of winter after a busy time, I don’t blame you – neither do I! However if you would like to spend some time setting yourself up for success in 2023, moving as slowly or as fast as feels right to you, I’ve given you some ideas on how to make a start. I hope you find them helpful and I always love to hear how you’re getting on.

Sending so much love xxx
